With mobile phones making up one of the top five things we take away the chances are you'll be considering travelling with your mobile phone. If so make sure you read the following guide, for passengers leaving Blackpool Airport, on taking your mobile phone on holiday.

Travelling With Your Mobile Phone ...

When travelling with your mobile phone be sure to look into taking your mobile phone abroad carefully, and in plenty of time before you travel. Here we provide advice on activating your mobile phone so it will actually work and how to try and get the best tariff so calls from abroad won't cost the Earth. We even explain why calls on mobile phones abroad cost so much.

Taking Your Mobile Phone Abroad ...

When planning on travelling with your mobile phone make sure you think carefully about the following pointers and speak to your Network provider:

  • To use your mobile phone abroad you will need to speak to your Network provider for them to enable what's called the 'International roaming' facility, which can take up to 14 days.

  • You need to make sure your mobile phone will work in the Country you are travelling to because some Countries use different handsets and networks, like America who use tri-band handsets.

  • Make sure you ask how much calls made overseas will cost you as this may effect the number of times you use your mobile - call charges are often much, much more than those made in the UK.

  • It's also worth asking if any deals are running that relate specifically to the Country you're travelling too as these might be better for you than on that covers, say, Worldwide if you're just travelling to Europe.
Here are the customer services numbers for the UK's Network providers:

  UK Network Providers
  O2 0870 225 7879
  Orange 0800 079 0006
T-Mobile 0845 412 5000
Three 08707 330 333
Virgin 0845 6000 789
Vodafone 08700 700 191
Tesco Mobile 0845 301 44 55

The Right Overseas Tariff ...

If you travel frequently overseas it could well be the most cost effective solution for you to change tariffs to one that includes cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee. Do check though how long you would have to be tied into the contract for.

If you don't travel overseas frequently then look into the option of using a temporary International SIM card in your phone that you can use whilst you are away that allows you to call from overseas. However, check the card you buy doesn't have an expiry date that's before or during your time away.

International SIM cards can be bought at most International airports and some UK mobile phone retailers.

Don't be caught out like so many people who forget, make sure you pack an electrical adapter for your mobile phone charger.

Using Your Mobile Phone On Holiday ...

Once you've arrived abroad with your mobile phone you just need to turn it on as usual, once permitted to do so by the airport.

Then, your phone automatically locks itself onto a local transmitter that your Network provider has routed it to.

However, the reason calls from overseas can cost so much money is because whilst you have set up International roaming your mobile still thinks it's in the UK. So, say you are in France, calling a friend also in France, your call is routed via the UK so it travels over 1,800 miles. What's more, your friend in France receiving the call will also be charged for picking it up.

This is why it's so important to either find a tariff that offers you discounted overseas calls or you look into using a temporary International SIM card.

Emergency Contact Numbers...

Do make sure you put the following numbers into your mobile before you leave: :

  • Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator

  • Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying

  • Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500
  Services for Briton’s overseas +44 (0) 207 008 0210
Travel Advice +44 (0) 845 850 2829

Security For Your Mobile Phone On Holiday ...

Should the worst happen, and your mobile phone on holiday is lost or stolen you'll need to make sure you have all the information your Network provider will need to cancel or block your phone/SIM card.

Therefore write down your mobile phone number, the phone's IMEI/Serial number, any passwords or pin numbers your Network provider might need to cancel the phone and the number of your Network provider. Keep this in a separate place whilst you're away to where you will be keeping your mobile phone.

It's always sensible, when travelling abroad, that you take out Travel Insurance. For more information visit our Travel Insurance Page. However, do note that most policies do not cover mobile phones as standard.
