Airport Parking At Blackpool ...

Passengers flying out of Blackpool Airport can choose the car parking option that best suits their needs from a choice determined by level of service required, length of stay and budget.

The short stay car park is better suited for anyone dropping off or collecting travellers, or passengers who are travelling away for just a short time.

Anyone travelling for a few days or more should consider one of two long stay parking options - the long stay car park with a free transfer bus connection to the terminal, or the meet and greet valet parking service where by passengers simply drop their car off with a meet and greet Rep right outside the airport terminal. On the return journey the car is ready and waiting with the Rep, again right outside the terminal. This means passengers can go straight to check-in, especially convenient if running late, it's a night time or early morning flight, you are travelling with children or persons with disabilities or special needs. Passengers who are travelling with large or heavy luggage also benefit from this parking service, as do corporate passengers who do not have the time to wait for the transfer bus.

You can expect to pay £83 for one week and £118 for two weeks, depending on the operator you choose.

Do pre-booking valet meet and greet parking however as this service is popular.

To book call 0870 300 600 9 or visit www.help-me-park.com.

Otherwise, you could consider the airport's Fast Track parking where cars are parked within the short stay car park. Pay around £11.00 for 24 hours or part thereof.

Arriving At The Airport ...

As soon as you have arrived at Blackpool Airport it's advised you move straight to check-in. Firstly you can make sure you are all seated together if early to check-in. You can also deposit your heavy luggage leaving you free to browse the airport's shopping facilities or simply to relax and enjoy a coffee, beer or something to eat.

You'll need to make sure you leave plenty of time to check-in for your flight as security measure have tightened considerably and therefore the security controls do take longer to get through. It's advised that you check in by the following times:

Type Of Flight Check In Time
Long Haul Flights 3 HOURS before departure
European Flights 2 HOURS before departure
UK & Northern Ireland Flights 1 HOUR before departure
Ryanair 2 HOURS before departure

You need to make sure you keep your luggage with you at all times. Basic airport security insists that you do not leave your luggage unattended. That you do not agree to look after another passenger's luggage. You do not carry anything onto the aircraft for another passenger or add something to your luggage for them.

You must also, after check-in, keep your hand luggage with you at all times.

You will need to know your boarding gate so you can get onto the plane. The boarding gate is displayed on screens situated throughout the departure lounge. When displayed do start making your way, especially in some of the larger airports where they can be positioned very far away, some can even take 30 minutes to reach.

You'll find details on the security checks by going to the Airport Safety and Security section within this Fly Guide.

Comfortable Flying ...

When travelling by plane you need to make sure you have everything you need for your flight to make it's as comfortable as possible, so you need to think about your hand luggage.

Make sure your hand luggage includes your valuables (rather than including them in your main luggage), medication including travel sickness pills, ear plugs, eye masks - both of which could help you sleep - also think about what you might need if you're delayed - a spare top, toothbrush etc.

Pack some snacks as airline food can be small. However, Customs won't let you pack fruit or dairy products. Also think about having a proper meal before you leave home, or at the airport.

Try and make the flight a little more entertaining (especially if you've seen the in-flight movie) by taking some books and magazines. Even your CD player.

Try and stay comfortable by avoiding swollen hands and feet that's caused by dehydration because of the cabin's pressure. Drink lots of water and limit alcohol too. It's also worth taking your shoes and socks off and letting your feet breath a little.

It can get jolly cold in the cabin so pack a warm jumper.

Avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) as best you can by walking around on the plane. You need to get the blood circulating. You can do this by wiggling your toes and doing some leg stretches. DVT can strike in air passengers because they get little or no exercise and therefore blood clots develop in the deep veins of the legs. Do make take extra care to move about when travelling long haul.

You can find advice on DVT, like who's at risk and ways to help prevent it, by visiting the Department of Health website.- Click Here

  Staying Comfortable When Flying
  1. Upgrade The ultimate in flying - an upgrade to Business Class or First Class. Ask the Ground Hostess if any are available.
  2. Front Row Seats Ask for a front row seat that has extra leg room, or a seat by one of the emergency exits.
3. Aisle Seats Aisle seats also benefit from extra leg room so see if any of these seats are available. They are also handy for getting up to stretch your legs, and that you don't have to climb over other passengers next to you to get out.
4. Pillow To help you sleep ask the cabin crew for a blanket and pillow. Also, pack an eye mask to block out the light and ear plugs to block out any noise. You could also see if the refreshments trolley has any hot chocolate that can also help aid sleep.
5. Painful Ears If you get painful ears when taking off and landing, invest in some special ear plugs, like Earplanes, that equalise air pressure on each side of your ear drum.  They're also good if you've got a cold or suffer with sinus problems.
6. Dehydration Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated which will in turn avoid swelling hands and feet. Also think about reducing the amount of alcohol you consume.
7. Snacks Be sure to include some snacks for when you are a bit peckish, in your hand luggage. Also useful if you are delayed.
8. Anxiety If you suffer from flight anxiety try some simple breathing skills and let your mind wander off with a good book or a crosswords - both that will take your mind off the flight. Failing that, do go and talk to your Doctor who might be able to give you something that calms you before and during the flight.

Travelling with Young Children ...

Think carefully about your little ones when you are travelling by plane. They will get bored, fed up and then start getting a bit whiney.

Remember that whilst your airlines should give your child a little entertainment pack they are great but it won't last the length of the flight so you do need to pack your own bits and pieces.

This is why you need to pack some games - travel sized games are good to fit into your hand luggage, toys, reading books and some colouring books and crayons. And why not try making up some stories about the plane, the Country you are travelling to or mystical far away places.

If you're flying with a small baby pack plenty of food and/or milk, and pack some for any delays you might experience. Also finger foods and nibbles, plenty of nappies, muslins, bib and dummy.

You will also need to pack some warm clothes for your children as it will get cold on the flight, it's also worth packing a spare just in case of any little accidents too. Even consider packing a blanket from home to help them sleep, especially if travelling with a baby.

Travelling with Special Needs or Disabilities ...

If flying with special needs or disabilities it's worth checking that any special assistance you'll be requiring is actually included in the price of your the ticket. You also need to make sure that the airline is fully aware of your disabilities and any specialist help you may need so you can avoid any inconvenience at the airport.

Wheelchair bound passengers can often be asked at check-in to transfer into an airline chair. If you are not comfortable with this try rearranging to stay in your own chair before you travel, or ask at check-in.

Special assistance vehicles are best to be pre-booked in advance of travel to avoid any delays. Do bear in mind also, that some of the boarding gates can be quite far away so even if normally you are able to walk a distance consider booking this service.
