Flying began in Blackpool back in 1909, when Britain's first official major air show was held at Squires Gate.
Breathtaking displays in the most primitive flying machines were watched by 200,000 spectators.
One year later in 1910, the Squires Gate land was leased to a syndicate of business men and turned into a horse racing course.
However, at the start of World War 1, the site was turned into a military convalescent home, which eventually closed in 1924.
In 1927, a municipal airport was opened near to Stanley Park, where passengers could fly to The Isle of Man for £1.80.
Rival companies began flying from Squires Gate in 1932, and in 1936 it was decided that Blackpool only needed one main airport, and in 1937, flying ceased from Stanley Park.
The Squires Gate airfield was taken over by the Air Ministry in 1939 and developed for the Royal Air Force.
Between 1941 and the end of World War 2, Vickers produced a total of 3,841 Wellington bombers. The airfield was also the base for Spitfire fighters, largely to protect Liverpool from raiding German bombers.
When the hostilities had come to an end, Squires Gate was designated a Civil Airport and by 1949, many alterations and improvements had been carried out to appeal to the new age of air traveller.
The Ministry of Aviation assumed control of the Airport in 1962, and then in 1987, Blackpool Airport was turned into a Private Limited Company with the Council holding 100% of the shares.
In 1995, a new £2 Million terminal was opened and the old wooden terminal was demolished.
In July 2004, City Hopper Airports Limited took over operation of the airport.
During 2005, the airport saw 400,000 passengers travel through the airport, and at the start of 2006, a further £2 Million refurbishment of the terminal was completed to enable the airport to handle 2 Million passengers per year.
Passenger figures for 2006 have been predicted at 750,000. |
