The World's Time Zones ...

Did you know that over one hundred and twenty years go all of the World's cities set their own time. This was done by setting the clock at 12 noon when the sun had reached it's highest point above each different city.

So because the sun is seen differently, even when just a few hundred miles distance apart, neighbouring cities set their clocks differently i.e. in New York City it would be 6pm and in Boston it would be 6:12pm as New York is about 3 degrees west of New York City.

This way of setting the time was fine, until that was modern transportation and increasingly popular communication links were in frequent use. So a Canadian railway engineer and planner, Sir Sandford Fleming, along with the day's railroad companies, thought about introducing time zones in the late 1870s. So they set about creating a time zone system and by 1883 it was in use.

The idea became popular across the World and by 1884, at an International conference held in Washington, D.C. the current world time zones were set. The World was separated into 24 time zones, each a long strip from the South to the North Pole, around 15 degrees of longitude wide and about one hour difference in time.

So, everyone that resided in a time zone would set their clock in the same way, to the local time in the centre of the time zone, which was easy as there are 24 hours in a day.

Even today this time zones system is still in place in nearly all of the World's countries, including the UK.
